More of Who We Truly Are

For better or worse, being inauthentic is exhausting.
Sooner or later we all get found out.

We’re born knowing who we are, but in so many cases we quickly learn to forget in order to conform, fit in and survive.

As we go through life, we remember in varying degrees at different stages but we often choose not to go there. Instead we choose to believe what we’ve been taught and take it as gospel on blind faith. It’s an easier option.

Or we have a really good grasp of who we are but we hide our authentic selves, hide out in order to feel safe. Once again, it can seem like the easier choice.

Some will wear masks and talk a good game when their aim is really manipulation. They’ve figured out how to work the system to get what they want.

But I have noticed that as people get older they tend to become more of who they truly are. For better or worse, being inauthentic is exhausting.
For example, I grew up in a home where being mean was seen as a badge of honor. Being able to ‘one up’ another was the way to navigate life in order to survive. I have understood for years now that this modus operandi was born of oppression and insecurity but that was what I was taught, through osmosis, just by existing in that home. It wasn’t until I was a young adult, stepping into my own and further away from the influence of family and community that the light began to seep in through the cracks of inauthenticity.

Over the years I have become a kinder, gentler, wiser version of myself. I have asked myself the hard questions for decades and made it my life’s mission to become a better version of myself, to lead an authentic life in alignment with my soul’s purpose, to examine my feelings, my choices, my interactions and relationships.  I am a work in progress still and that is the nature of life. We don’t get it done; we just keep moving and growing.

If we wear a mask, or multiple masks for that matter, and are pretending to be someone or something we’re not, the façade will sooner or later crack and then crumble; no matter how hard we try to keep wearing it. Sooner or later we all get found out.

That’s why I say; as we get older we become more of who we truly are.

We’ve had a lifetime to sculpt who we are, how we navigate the world and how we live our lives. We can choose to wear a mask that conceals us for whatever reasons or rewards it brings us. Or we can choose to live authentically, intentionally crafting a life that is in line with who we truly are on soul level.

To me, living a life that is intentionally crafted and sculpted in line with the truth of our soul is to Be a Work of Art in Motion.
